Workers Compensation

Workers Compensation is a coverage that is generally required by law. Every employer is responsible to comply with the workers compensation law of any state where they have employees. Depending on the state, they can either self-insure, if they are large enough, or purchase a policy which provides the coverage mandated by their particular state.

Workers Compensation provides coverage for all medical related expenses for any accident or sickness that is determined to be work related. In addition, the injured employee is eligible to receive disability payments based on his or her level of earnings. There is usually a permanent disability benefit if the employee is determined to be totally disabled. Most states also provide an employee death benefit.

The cost of Workers Compensation coverage is born by the employers and is calculated as a percentage of payroll. The payroll is separated into different classes of employees. The classes are determined by claims experience and the probability of how often an employee doing that type of work may suffer a work related injury.
